Our Lady of Sorrows

Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes, Seville

The artist makes do with just one sword rather than the seven seen in some other versions. The inscription at the bottom of the painting quotes the third line of the hymn Stabat Mater: O quan tristis et aflicta fuit illa benedicta mater unigeniti, "Oh how sad and afflicted was that blessed mother of the Only-begotten."
